SCIENCE-2-U 2023-2024 CLASSES AT PCLC

CALENDAR:  Mandatory orientation August 22-24th. Class instruction begins August 29th, 2023 with 1st Semester ending December 14th. Second Semester starts January 9th and ends May 9th, 2024. 

There will be no classes on the following dates: Nov 20 – 24, Dec 18 – Dec 31, 2023;  Jan 1 – Jan 5, Feb 19 – 23, Mar 25 – Apr 5, 2024.

Hands-on science classes for K-5th grade. The subject of study changes monthly with a mix of physical and life science courses.

Supplies will not be provided for online students. A supply list will be provided by your instructor prior to the first day of school.

Earth & Space Science 8th $425

This course is for older Jr High students (8th). We will cover material in the following areas: stars and planets, the sun, asteroids, comets, meteors, The Space Program, weather, rocks and minerals, fossils, mountain formation, volcanoes, earthquakes, erosion, glaciers, and more! Each week will have a live lecture and hands-on lab. Textbook reading, homework questions, lab paperwork, and tests will be completed by the student at home. A science fair project will be completed by each student during 2nd semester. A field trip will also be offered.

Life Science 7th $425

This course is for Jr High students (preferably 7th) and is introductory to the life sciences. We will cover cells, genetics, mitosis/meiosis, photosynthesis, protein synthesis, respiration, the 6 kingdoms, and human anatomy. Each week will have a live lecture and hands-on lab. Textbook reading, homework questions, lab paperwork, and tests will be completed by the student at home. A science fair project will also be completed by each student during 2nd semester. A field trip may be offered.

Marine Science 6th $425

This class will introduce your student to the beauty of our oceans and the organisms that live in them. We will also focus on some local creatures that live here on our beaches, including the California grunion which lays its eggs in the sand! It will cover topics such as Intro to oceanography, marine habitats (coral reefs, tide pools, kelp forests, sandy beaches, etc.), and marine organisms. Some dissections will be performed in this class. This class will include weekly homework, review, lecture, and hands-on lab with 1-2 field trips. A Shark project will also be completed by each student during 2nd semester.

Physical Science 8 - 9th
$450

This course may be for late Jr High or early High School (8th-9th) and is an a-g level physical science class that meets once a week for 90 minutes. The class meets for 30 weeks per year (15 weeks/semester). Students will have weekly live lectures and hands-on labs. Reading, lab homework, and testing will be completed online at home. There will be 1 self-directed project, 1 science fair project, and 1 research paper in addition to the regular class work. The course introduces concepts in chemistry and physics. Subjects covered will include the scientific method, metrics and conversions, matter, atomic structure and chemical bonding, and properties of matter as well as energy and motion, acceleration and momentum, Newton’s laws, and the gas laws. A unit on the electromagnetic spectrum including focused material on sound and light will be covered. A unit of electricity, magnetism, and energy sources will conclude our study. All lab supplies are provided when students are in person. Supplies will not be provided for online classes. A supply list will be available prior to the beginning of school.

Criminology: Forensic Science
9 - 12th $450
1 SEMESTER ONLY

Forensic Science (9-12th grades) is a one-semester elective (taught 2nd semester only) that will consist of weekly lectures, homework, review, and labs. Students will study the science of crime scene investigation. Topics included: scene of the crime, evidence, blood splatter patterns, blood factors, forgery, autopsy, forensic entomology, botany, and odontology. This course will include a focus on careers related to crime scene investigation. Each week will have a live lecture and hands-on lab. Weekly homework assignments from the textbook and lab paperwork will be completed by students at home. Tests will be taken online at home and will be administered by a parent/guardian.

**Please note that this elective is only for one semester. This class may be taken with Health for High School, taught in the first semester, to have a full year of science, or as an independent one-semester class.**

Health For High School
9 - 12th $450
1 SEMESTER ONLY

Health for High School is a one-semester elective (taught 1st semester only) that fulfills the High School health requirement for California. The class will include lecture, video, discussion, and weekly activities or labs. In this course, we will respect the parents’ right to teach some sensitive subjects at home. The following subjects will be covered: Understanding health and wellness, taking charge of your health, achieving mental and emotional health, managing stress, healthy relationships, nutrition and physical fitness, reproduction, education and the risks involved with tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs. Understanding and preventing communicable diseases including STDs such as HIV/AIDS. We will also cover safety and injury prevention, first aid, and CPR. Students will be able to earn certification for First aid and CPR for an additional cost of $50. All other materials for the class will be provided in person and through Google Classroom.

**Please note that this elective is only for one semester. This class may be taken with Criminology: Forensic Science, taught in the second semester, to have a full year of science or as an independent one-semester class.**

Biology 9 - 10th $475

This a-g level biology class meets once a week for 2 hours (1 hour of lecture, 1 hour of lab).  The class meets for 30 weeks per year (15 weeks/semester). Students will have weekly live lectures and hands-on labs. Reading, labs, and testing will be completed online at home with the exception of two in-class practicum exams. The course covers the top concepts in biology including a brief overview of chemistry in the body, then onto a thorough investigation of cells, protein synthesis, cellular respiration, and photosynthesis. Mendelian genetics is covered with labs focused on how blood types are inherited followed by a unit on origins. A complete survey of the 3 domains and 6 kingdoms is filled with dissections of various representative specimens and is followed by a unit of ecology. A unit on human anatomy finishes up the course. Supplies will not be provided for online classes. A supply list will be available prior to the beginning of school.

Chemistry 10 - 12th $475

This a-g level chemistry class meets once a week for 2.25 hours. The class meets for 30 weeks per year (15 weeks/semester). Students will have weekly live lectures and hands-on labs. Reading, lab reports, and testing will be completed online at home with the exception of two in-class final exams.  The course covers the structure of the atom, the periodic table, chemical bonding, molecular structure and reactivity. A unit on moles and stoichiometry followed by a study of gases, solutions and acids and bases. Reaction rates and chemical equilibrium will be explored followed by redox reactions and electrochemistry. Finally, we will explore biochemistry and some organic chemistry. There will be a significant emphasis on laboratory practice, with weekly labs and/or demonstrations, along with computation for quantitative analysis. Weekly homework assignments from the textbook, lab notebooks, and handouts will be completed by the students at home each week. Tests will be sent home with the student to be administered by their parents and returned to class the following week. Supplies will be provided when students are in class.

Prerequisite: Completion of Algebra 1
