High School Chemistry Classes

General Chemistry

High School level 10 - 12 - two-semester course
Pre-requisite: completion of Algebra 1
Cost of class: $500/semester.

PCLC (Westminster): Tuesdays: 8:15-10:15 a.m. or Thursdays: 8:15-10:15 a.m. or Thursdays: 2:45 -4:45 p.m.

EIE (Monrovia): Thursdays:

Chemistry  Thursday  11:30 - 2:00

Instructor: Lisa Wright

General Chemistry (Conceptual Chemistry): Thursdays: 11:30-12:15

Combined lab: 12:15-1:15

Honors Chemistry: additional 1:15-2:00 Recitation

1st Semester dates EIE: TBA

Both classes will include such topics as:

 Structure of the atom

  • Elements of the periodic table
  • Chemical bonding
  • Molecular structure and reactivity
  • Mole concepts and Stoichiometry
  • Gases, solutions, and acids & bases
  • Reaction rates and chemical equilibrium
  • Redox reactions and electrochemistry
  • Introduction to biochemistry and organic chemistry

 

There will be a significant emphasis on laboratory practice, with weekly labs and/or demonstrations, along with computation for quantitative analysis. Class at EIE will also have some practice questions for the SAT II chemistry subject test to discuss. Weekly homework assignments from the textbook, lab notebooks and handouts will be completed by the students at home each week. Tests will be sent home with the student to be administered by their parent and returned to class the following week.
