Engineering & Applied Science (High School Elective, NGSS-Aligned)
In this one-semester elective, students apply engineering design principles to solve real-world problems while building technical and problem-solving skills through individual and team projects. Topics include:
- simple and complex machines
- molecular interactions
- electricity
- energy transfer
- systems engineering
Students explore practical questions such as how phones operate, engines function, water can be pumped uphill, and satellites orbit Earth, applying science and math concepts to develop working solutions.
Instruction is fully NGSS-aligned, integrating Science and Engineering Practices, including: planning and carrying out investigations, analyzing and interpreting data, developing and using models, constructing explanations, and designing solutions. Students also engage with crosscutting concepts such as cause and effect, systems and system models, energy and matter, structure and function, and stability and change.
